Secret Sandy Christmas Gifts Relief
It is finally the start of the Christmas shopping season. While many of us have already started shopping for everything on that Christmas list, there are still many people in New York who are affected by Superstorm Sandy which has left many people without power.
In comes duo Joy Huang and Kimberley Berdy who have co-founded the website Secret Sandy. Secretsandy.org is a website which is a Secret Santa-esque endeavor, dedicated to giving gifts to children who live in areas that have been affected by Sandy. All of the gifts are being purchased on a volunteer basis. Children can write letters to Secret Sandy, give their wish lists to the site, and they will then be distributed to volunteers.
Many families and neighborhoods in New York are still without power, so Secret Sandy has been traveling on the ground in many neighborhoods to ensure children can fill out wish lists and return them to Secret Sandy volunteers.
Huang and Berdy created this grassroots campaign entirely on their own. The Secret Sandy website was launched on Monday along with its Facebook and Twitter. They have already amassed over 300 likes on Facebook and over 60 followers on Twitter. Huang and Berdy urge people to share their website with friends, coworkers and even the local press to help the project grow.
New York Girl Style is a proud sponsor for Secret Sandy. While Secret Sandy has only had its website up for five days, they have already been approached to do a fundraising event at Lincoln Center. Berdy said they plan on working with CBS for an event as well as NBC for a radio interview on Secret Sandy’s mission. Not only this, but celebrities such as Marlon Wayans have joined the cause via Twitter.
Berdy and Huang are residents of New Jersey and New York, respectively, and while they both gave back to the Sandy Relief effort, they realized more could be done, and Secret Sandy was created. Secret Sandy already has over 130 registered volunteers and many more children who are in need of Christmas cheer.
The duo feels that while these families may feel they have little reason to celebrate this year, Secret Sandy will happily help them out and do whatever they can do bring Christmas to those who are still being affected by Sandy.
